The Panhellenic Public Health Congress 2024, titled ‘Public Health in the Face of the Climate Crisis’, was held from June 13 to 15, 2024, at the School of Public Health, University of West Attica, with in-person attendance.

The Congress was organized again this year by the Hellenic Society of Public Health (EEDY), with the scientific support of the Department of Public and Community Health of the University of West Attica (UNIWA) and the Forum of Public Health and Social Medicine, and with Prof. Anastasia Mparmpouni serving as Chair of the Organizing Committee. Given that the climate crisis is one of the most pressing challenges humanity faces today, with its extensive and visible impact on public health, the Panhellenic Public Health Congress 2024 focused on the link between the climate crisis and public health. From rising temperatures and the increasing frequency of extreme weather conditions to the emergence of climate-related diseases and nutritional inequalities, the climate crisis poses a serious threat to the health and well-being of the population.

The Mediterranean Innovation Centre for One Health (MED – OHC) accepted the invitation to participate, represented by Professor Serkos Haroutounian, a distinguished member of the Centre’s Scientific Council. Mr. Haroutounian delivered a compelling speech titled ‘Steps Towards Sustainability’, on the topic ‘Addressing Contemporary Challenges through the One Health Strategy’, emphasizing the imperative to integrate the ONE HEALTH approach at global, regional, and national levels. He highlighted the need to support interventions and mobilize investments to advance the one society strategy, which fosters enhanced collaboration among regions, countries, and sectors. Embracing the ONE HEALTH strategy is deemed essential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The following individuals also participated: Mr. Moschos Korasidis with his presentation on ‘The contribution of precision agriculture to the sustainability of agriculture’, Ms. Zefi Dimadama discussing ’17 UN Sustainable Development Goals: Dilemmas and perspectives’, and Ms. Kalliopi Pagkou presenting ‘Strategies for the protection and good status of the marine environment, with a view to promoting sustainable use of the seas and the conservation of marine ecosystems’.
